The Magicians
Magic Elephants was founded in 2014 by documentary photographer and independent filmmaker Balaji Maheshwar. In 2023, his partner Anjana Shekar, who is an independent writer and translator, joined the company.
They live in Chennai and also run a small photobook library called Bookroom where they host workshops and film viewing sessions.

How we Work
We are drawn towards telling stories, interacting with people and weaving together a narrative that they’ll fondly revisit over and over again. Therefore, we value the people we work with. Not the trends, not the special effects, not the gadgets.
Every year, we take up a small number of weddings to make sure we aren’t drained by a very demanding industry that is only focused on churning out content. This ensures that we stay passionate and engrossed in every story that we tell.
We take time and care in getting to know the couple and their story to be able to tell it in a way that’s both reflective of who they are as a person and who we are as a company.
Building a Community
We love working with family archives and would jump at an opportunity to create a personalized documentary-style narrative. That includes our commitment to re-engage with the same couple on any of their important life milestones. This is the kind of brand value that we’re trying to build, one that’s not very different from being a family.
